Certified in orofacial myofunctional therapy through SimonSays (a program designed for SLPs to diagnose and treat OMDs), I offer 3 therapeutic avenues for clients in need of OMT: Thumbs Up! (30 day oral habit elimination curriculum), Tongue Tips (for clients with orofacial myofunctional disorders, often in coordination with orthodontic work), and Tiny Tongue Tips, for younger children with OMD. Orofacial myofunctional disorders impact both children and adults, and can result in postural problems, disordered facial and dental growth patterns, swallowing disorders, mouth breathing, tongue thrust, and articulation disorders. Therapy may need to address one or all of these problems, depending on the type and severity of the disorder. Early identification and intervention can often prevent or ameliorate malocclusions requiring orthodontic intervention. OMT is also often prescribed before placement and after removal of orthodontic expanders, to improve outcomes and prevent relapse. Clients with tethered oral tissues (TOTs) can also sign up for pre- and post-frenectomy exercises to ensure successful release of a tongue and/or lip tie.
