Articulation
Articulation disorders can affect early or late developing sounds.  In severe cases, an articulation disorder can impact not only speech clarity (intelligibility) but expressive and social language development as well. Even mild articulation disorders can increase self-consciousness and frustration, resulting in behavioral problems and/or reduced participation in academic and social settings.  Click here for more information.
Reading and Writing
Reading disorders are most commonly referred to as "dyslexia" and can trigger a crisis when a child reaches kindergarten or first-grade.  Popular understanding holds that dyslexia involves letter reversals, and in some cases that is true. But a certified speech language pathologist understands that there can be much more involved.

Writing involves many of the same skills as reading, and certainly relies on an ability to read, but here expressive language and organizational skills are key.  A speech language pathologist can help identify and treat many of the factors that can cause frustration when children are struggling to write, at all levels of schooling.

Fluency
Everyone experiences moments of dysfluency, whether triggered by external factors, such as a stressful situation, or by internal factors, such as a lapse in vocabulary.  In young children, it can by difficult for parents to know how much dysfluency is within the range of normal speech. This is where a speech-language pathologist can help.  Click here for more information.
Resting Posture and Swallowing
Clients, adults and children alike, may be referred to a speech-language pathologist by a dentist or orthodontist following the identification of a "tongue thrust" or "reverse" swallow.  This swallow pattern, along with poor oral resting posture, are fairly common orofacial myofunctional disorders that can be addressed effectively once identified.  Many  professionals will not proceed with their own treatment plans until this swallowing pattern and/or oral resting posture has been corrected. These common disordered motor patterns can affect the development of dentition, speech, and eating, as well as contributing to sleep and attentional disturbances.  A certified speech-language pathologist can design therapeutic intervention to correct it. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Clients of all ages can be impacted orofacial myofunctional disorders.  OMDs are sometimes related to tongue-tie (restricted lingual frenum) and can cause a myriad of issues, from mild articulation disorders to complex swallowing, breathing, and dental problems.  Click here for more information .
